Developing Entrepreneurial Graduates

An action learning project

With NESTA and the NCGE we have convened a global panel of experts in entrepreneurship education to explore the challenges facing universities as they develop cross-campus initiatives to embed and offer an experience of entrepreneurship education to their students and engage academic faculty.

The panel includes:

  • Dr. Elizabeth Gatewood, Director, Office of Entrepreneurship, Wake Forest University, USA, developing approaches to entrepreneurship in the liberal arts.
  • Dr. Tony Mendes – Executive Director of the Academy for Entrepreneurial Leadership at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
  • Prof. Allan Gibb – Durham University, UK and lead consultant to the NCGE on entrepreneurship education.
Mr. Uffe Elbaek – Founder, KaosPilots, Denmark, developed alternative approaches to higher education and entrepreneurial approaches to learning.
  • Prof. Daniel Hjorth – Research Professor, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark, initiator of a Scandinavian network on entrepreneurship education.
  • Dr. David Clews – Head of the HE Academy Subject Centre for the Creative Industries, author of NESTA report on entrepreneurship in the creative industries.
  • Mr. Ian Ritchie – technology entrepreneur, Board member of Scottish Enterprise, Board member of Scottish Higher Education Funding Council.

Virtual group

A wider virtual group will support the work of the panel to provide broader knowledge in the area and help reflect on the outcomes from the project.  This will help in bringing both a UK-focused and a global perspective to the findings.  This group will consist of experts from around Europe, the US, and Asia.

Testing ideas in Phase 2

In phase 2 of the project we hope to continue our work with NESTA and the NCGE to run a number of pilots at selected universities to test the model. A number of CIHE member companies, including Anglo American, Accenture, Oracle, Pfizer, PwC and others have expressed their willingness to work with us to test if the graduates who leave these pilots are more enterprising, innovative and entrepreneurial people.
